Wisconsin State Capitol

Wisconsin State Capitol – Preserving a National Landmark

As Wisconsin’s third state capitol building, this grand structure was designed by George B. Post in the Beaux-Arts style, emphasizing symmetry, classical details, and monumental scale. Construction began in 1906 and was completed in 1917, resulting in one of the nation’s most striking capitol buildings.

The capitol features 43 types of stone from six countries and eight U.S. states, with the largest granite dome in the country rising 284.4 feet. At its peak stands Wisconsin, a gilded statue by sculptor Daniel Chester French, symbolizing progress and prosperity. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the capitol remains a defining landmark of Madison and a symbol of the state’s government.
